The awards are out and as expected the globes showed us the way of how popularity contests work. The globes had many that deserved praise and a award this year but the Hollywood Foreign Press once again managed to make some of them walk away empty handed.
This year looked already to be the year for the Social Network. Some might disagree with me on believing that film is pretty simple and that its nothing close to a masterpiece. But I believe films with more original ideas and that take advantage of the medium of cinema to great lengths should be rewarded for their efforts before universal story motifs and popularity. Its not a problem with one year there is a fluke decision but it gets tiring when it happens 8 times out of 10.
What am I asking is for and I believe many more is for the popularity contest to end. For films that actually break the boundaries of cinema to be rewarded, for actors that shine to be acknowledged and for more diverse films to be recognized out of the Hollywood system. But how could that be when the Social Networks, the Avatars, the Slumdog Millionaires, the Shakespeare's in Loves take the glory away from films that are leaps ahead from the competition.
P.S. Besides the globes being disappointing with their results, they were a hit with their glamorous host once again. Ricky Gervais was a perfect host by not only being funny but provoking the room at every chance.
