Sherlock Holmes (2009)

director: Guy Ritchie
writers: Michael Robert Johnson
starring: Robert Downey Jr. , Jude Law, Rachel McAdams ,Mark Strong
genre: Action, Adventure, Mystery

There is a certain kind of image in our heads when we hear the name Sherlock Holmes. A fictional brilliant detective living in London around late 1890 smoking his pipe and being able to solve any case that might be going on. However, for us that never read the Sherlock Holmes books that is only a piece of the cake called Sherlock Holmes as a fictional character and as the movie Sherlock Holmes.

The opening is just amazing and full of action i might add, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his partner Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) are racing against time to prevent to a murder of a girl or some sort of evil ritual that is about to happen by Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) They finally succeed in arresting Blackwood and putting an end to the ritual and him. Blackwood is sentenced to death but only to warn Holmes that more deaths are about to come. After his death they find his tomb destroyed from the inside out like Blackwood was alive and was able to dig his way out but to make things more confusing for Holmes he is being visited by Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) who she seems to be an old friend to Holmes with a love and hate relationship only to ask him to find a missing man so its up to Holmes to find out what is really going on and who is behind everything.

One of the things that i really liked was the representation of that era. The movie does an amazing job with the backgrounds and the representation of how London looked back then. The buildings, the dressing of the people, carriages, not to mention betting on underground wrestling comes from that era . It also does an amazing job showing us what really Sherlock Holmes was. He wasn't just your usual good guy he was drinking a lot of booze sniffing drugs, womanizer and lets just say that he wasn't the cleanest person back then. But all of this nasty habits are in the books and Robert Downey Jr. is just perfect for the role. In fact i think that Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law is a perfect duo for the roles that they are playing. The interaction between them along with the action scenes is really well made.

The acting is pretty good, sure there are some cheesy lines and moments but hey cant have it all. What makes the movie worth watching and whats keeps you on your toes is the flow of it, the way that Holmes was thinking and explaining at the right moment in a 2 hours film is brilliant that with a catchy music and tunes that were playing in the actions scenes or when Holmes was thinking are making the film even better.

If you haven't seen it go now and see it! For us who saw it well we should watch it again because it was one of the best movies at the cinema this year.
