Academy Awards Winners List & Report

The 2011 Academy Awards were not only one of the worst Oscar shows in history based on their decision making process of giving out rewards but also as entertaining awards show. It was boring, celebs/Hollywood too full of themselves and most importantly the Oscars are loosing a bigger gripe on what it is that progress cinema and what stimulates the minds of young and old cinema-goers today.

As a simple awards show it was the worst I have ever seen. The mediocre Whoopi Goldberg hosted shows were nothing compared to Anne Hathaway and James Franco abilities at losing not only Hollywood's elite but TV audiences as well. To host a awards show you need to be funny, confident, graceful, respected, even appalled by few (Ricky Gervais) and maybe most importantly a showman. Hugh Jackman was a risk when he was hired but he played it to the best of his abilities and was well liked. The Golden Globes knew the risk of Ricky Gervais roasting all of Hollywood and the award givers themselves but he created buzz, was funny and  ultimately a hit. Both Franco and Hathaway are great actors but shouldn't be ever hired again as host for a awards show. Being distant, cold, delivering flat jokes and pressuring yourself for people to like you and think your funny our  un-admirable characteristics for a awards show host to posses.

Compared to hosts the award giving was to no surprise once again mess as we had been used to for so many years. The predictions this year were as with last year spot on. Last year they said The Hurt Locker would get it and it did. And this year The Kings Speech was said to be the late front runner and they got it. Same thing with the acting categories. Everyone was predicted and has already been praised to death before they even got the award. And right there is the issue. The Oscars predictability at choosing films that are out of place with the public, critics and films that most certainly will not be remembered by most for many years to come. Kings Speech was a good film but it no way will it be remembered in 50 years as one those films that touched us in any true sort of way. Awards should be given to films that define cinema and take it forward. Not that the Social Network in my opinion deserved it. I was Inception all the way. But films that are remembered, praised, hailed, loved and seen over and over again most of times are the ones that never even got close to a award. People go crazy over the Social Network as if it is a ground breaking film. But when you've already seen David Fincher's Seven and Fight Club then there isn't really that much ground breaking about the Facebook movie.

Overall the show was a failure. Franco and Hathaway were terrible as hosts. The Academy were predictable in there choices of who won, and were tragic in many of there creative choices for the show throughout the night. When the show is supposed to glorify cinema and praise the films of last year whats the relevance of announcing a business deal with the channel showing the awards show. I end on that note and saying the Oscars are on slippery slope and it will be very difficult for them to turn it around and once again get the respect and recognition of fans and many people in the movie business.
