Death at a Funeral (2010)

Funerals are not suppose to be funny but sometimes they happen to be. In 2007 "Death at a Funeral" was made in England and came out to cinemas with minimal success. An American remake was called in to be made and once again came out to minimal success and critical appraisal. My question is why? Death at a Funeral is a very old fashioned comedy with lots of big name actors coming together and rolling with the punches. What could be wrong with that?

The story revolves around the funeral service of Aaron (Chris Rock) and Ryan's (Martin Lawrence) father. The service is taking place in their family home and everybody in the family is invited. The funeral doesn't go as planned as everybody is bringing their emotional baggage with them. But the funeral doesn't end to be a just a simple brotherly confrontation or a boyfriend, girlfriend dispute. Fatherly secrets, family crazies and much more come to be in a funeral that wont end that easily.

Ive never seen the original 2007 film so I cant really compare the films sadly. Without comparing and focusing only on the 2010 film I can proudly say that the 2010 film is a laugh fest. With big names attached, some from dramatic backgrounds others from comedic they all do a marvelous job. Marsden is a knockout as the drugged out boyfriend, Danny Glover is hilarious as the crazy old geezer and what can not be said about Tracy Morgan.

There is not much more to say about the film. It dosen't break the sound barrier for its funniest moments, it doesn't have the most intelligent jokes, but it doesn't need to anyway. It's got the right pace for a comedy at a funeral which you will constantly anticipating the next mad thing to happen and go along with it. Comedy is tricky and many people take it in the wrong way sometimes. So if you don't have a problem with dead people humor, drug jokes and the occasional toilet mayhem then Death at the Funeral is the perfect match for you. Check the trailer out as well and I believe you will be sold.

Clash of the Titans (2010)

Why is it that I cant understand people reaction and feelings to a movie sometimes? Is my view to skewed or they not seeing it correctly? Probably both. People's reaction to "Clash of the Titans" was of disappointment and contempt. When I hear that I ask myself why? What were people expecting from a Hollywood remake, which the trailer just showed off silly action with bad music?. I wasn't expecting anything in particular. What did they expect this to be the movie event of the year? Of course it would have never been. But people were expecting something and got nothing. I was expecting nothing and I got something. Clash of the Titans is a very well made action film and nothing more.

Im unable to compare this remake with its original of the 1981 as I haven't seen it. The story though I think it follows closely to the original. Perseus (Sam Worthington) is born a demigod and son of Zeus (Liam Neeson). Found by a fisherman he lives the life of a everyman. During this time the relationship between Gods and Man is at arms length. Provaction from both sides show a possible war or conflict near. Perseus human family becomes collateral damage in the war and his fate resides in the hands of the humans of the city of Argos. There he will realize his true nature as a demigod and decide where his allegiance lies with Gods or men. With help from a mysterious woman Io (Gemma Arterton) and the warriors of Argos, Perseus is on a mission to save Argos and to stop the underworld God Hades (Ralph Fiennes) sick plot.

First let me get the films negatives out of the way. First off about the 3D. Many people went to see the film with the expecation that it was a full 3D movie and instead were cheated. Titans as with many other films have been marketed as 3D when theyve been only converted to 3D and not filmed in 3D. Meaning its not 3D as you would expect it in Avatar. Another negative is plot progression. It falls to the cliche of our hero being the everyman who by chance is put in the right place in the right time to become the hero and save the day. But you cant be mad with that because its mythological tale and they are all tailored tales of glory, success and tragedy.

The biggest negative i saw with the film is that all these Hollywood films are made with the hope of being a franchise. To be the next Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. Instead of making a story where you get know the characters, they rush to the action of an epic story that the title character is a super hero and that he is worth seeing again and again. This formula is not the right one if to pursue a franchise. Imagine if in Lord of the Rings we didnt spend 40 minutes in the Shire with the Hobbits. That was there so we could understand what there fighting about. Also imagine if Frodo had no characterization? Why he was in love with the shire, and his uncle. That's Titans biggest problem. They rely on a few lines of dialogue to be enough to progress a story. Also theres the fact that the film is all about Gods vs Men but we never get a reason why there is this. What did the Gods do? Why are the humans so furious with the gods? Things like this affect a story, a film and the future of a franchise.

Now these are the problems I have with the film. Lets take about the problem others may have and do have. For example that Titans is too silly of a film with things like people riding on giant Scorpions. Personally I don't find that as a reason for a film to be bad. Lord of Rings had Legolas kill a giant Elephant with 12 guys on it. But people liked that film and excuse it. It's fantasy people, flying horses, a woman with hair with snakes. Why be picky? Other negatives is the way they treat mythology and the performances. Well I personally didn't see the degradation of Greek mythology or any Razzie Award style performances. I might be defending this film but it's because of the unrelenting thrashing it has gotten that I personally believe it didnt deserve. The effects were spectacular, the action was pretty good, performances and actors were adequate, the direction was just about right, music was better than excepted for a action film and the story was good but lacking in pacing, characterization and empathy for characters and story. Besides that the film was fine. Didnt see glaring plot holes, mispoken lines, or shaddy production elements which is all I'm saying.

Clash of the Titans may be the most punished film of the year yet and wrongly so in my opinion. I enjoyed the film very much and woulndt mind at all to see this franchise continue. There is great potential of course with better writers hired for future films. To all the naysayers who thrash on these kind of film is just stop being so harsh. Especially to films that never said they were going to be the best or when the films weren't hyped too big to you could be disappointed. You went in a film with grand hopes and with no effort of knowing what you got into you came out disappointed. Next time don't hype the film without reason and especially from a Hollywood film that is not made by a grande director and never contested to changing cinema as did Avatar did. Avatar had been super hyped and many of the mass didn't expect anything and got something. See the difference?

The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009)

When a film has the likes of John Travolta and Denzel Washington can it really be bad? Well yeah. But can these two make a mediocre remake into something special just by themselves well sorry to say but no. The Taking of Pelham 123 is one of the oddest choices for a remake that ive seen and a film with minimal potential for something special but just a simple popcorn flick.



The plot revolves around the train Pelham 123. On one of its routes in the N.Y. metro its hijacked by criminals headed by Ryder (John Travolta) with their goal on getting something from the good old city of N.Y. On the other side there lies Garber (Denzel Washington) a metro transit officer who is in the unlucky place to deal with the situation as a mediary. While the plot thickens we see what the true score of the villains are and the weird connection the two men on opposite sides have.



I didn’t expect much from the film. But hoped for something at least a little unique because of the actors and the director and writer who have showen excellence in the past. Instead of doing anything remarkable, everything is stale, done again and just time consuming. After seeing this film you will honestly ask yourself what was the point of this film. Seeing this film I wondered isn’t this the kind of film that should have been made in the 90’s when we used have these kind of plots. Arent ransom a bit done again. Haven’t we seen too many ransom films that we just don’t care if the hostages live or die.



The issues with the film don’t stop there. Tony Scott the director has developed a technique of directing for his last 4 or 5 films which is to re cut into scenes again and again in slow motion, more in your face subtitles, shaky and blurry camera work. All of this is in the film and fails miserably. Bluryiness gives you a headache and takes you away from the beautiful visuals a city like N.Y. can give you. Also the slow motion re ediitnng is pretty useless in a film with no action at all. If anybody wants to see a true Tony Scott film where these kind of techniques are used in a better fashion I suggest Man on Fire.



There not much more to say about this film but don’t see it. Having not seen the original I cant recommend it. But there are far too many other films with ransoms and hijacking that are far better. Pelham 123 is just mediocrity at Hollywood’s best.

Friday the 13th (2009)

Μια παρέα εφήβων ταξιδεύουν στο Crystal Lake για να περάσουν μερικές ξένοιαστες μέρες στο σπίτι ενός από αυτούς. Την ίδια μέρα περνάει απο την περιοχή ο Clay Miller, αναζητώντας την αδερφή του που εξαφανίστηκε εκεί κοντά χωρίς να αφήσει κανένα ίχνος. Αυτό που δεν γνωρίζει κανείς τους, είναι οτι βρίσκονται κοντά στο καταφύγιο του αιμοδιψούς δολοφόνου Jason Voorhees και αποτελούν τους επόμενους στόχους του..

Κριτική:

Τα τελευταία χρόνια βλέπουμε να αναβιώνουν στη μεγάλη οθόνη τρανταχτά ονόματα του κινηματογράφου τρόμου, όπως το Halloween, το Last house on the left και το Friday the 13^th, άλλα επιτυχώς, άλλα όχι τόσο, και άλλα αποτελώντας ύβρι ως πρός το αρχικό φιλμ. Παρακάτω θα δούμε που εντάσσονται οι νέες περιπέτειες του, ταλαιπωρημένου απο μερικά κακά sequels, Jason και της χατζάρας του.

Το σενάριο καταρχάς ελάχιστα πράγματα προσφέρει στην ιστορία της σειράς των ταινιών. Ουσιαστικά είναι απλα μια καινούρια ομάδα υποψήφιων θυμάτων, που μπαίνουν στην περιοχή δράσης του Jason, και το κυνήγι ξεκινά. Σε μια τέτοια ταινία σεναριακά συνήθως δεν περιμένεις βαθυστόχαστους διαλόγους ή νοήματα, και η εν λόγω δεν αποτελεί εξαίρεση. Το κακό όμως είναι οτι δεν παρουσιάζει καμία πρωτοτυπία και για κάποιον με στοιχειώδη εμπειρία σε ταινίες τρόμου είναι απόλυτα προβλέψιμη, δίνοντας την αισθησή οτι το έχεις ξαναδεί πολλές φορές το έργο.. Σαν θετικό μπορούμε να εκλάβουμε οτι, μένοντας σε τυποποιημένα μονοπάτια, τουλάχιστον δεν γίνεται γελοίο, κάτι που θα ήταν κρίμα και για τη φήμη του τίτλου.

Ο σκηνοθέτης απο την άλλη, κάνει φιλότιμη δουλειά. Εκμεταλλεύεται το σκοτάδι και το δάσος φτιάχνοντας ένα αρκετά κλειστοφοβικό κλίμα, και σε συνδυασμό με τη νευρική χρήση της κάμερας προκαλεί σε μερικά σημεία την αγωνία του θεατή. Εντύπωση μου έκανε οτι τα περισσότερα πλάνα είναι σε τρίτο πρόσωπο, παρά το οτι στις ταινίες τρόμου χρησιμοποιείται κατα κόρον πρώτο πρόσωπο για να λειτουργούν καλύτερα τα “ξαφνιάσματα” της ταινίας, άλλα ακόμα κι έτσι τα καταφέρνει αρκετά καλα, κυρίως λόγω της επιβλητικής φιγούρας του Jason.

Οι χαρακτήρες είναι επιφανειακοί, με αποτέλεσμα να μη δένεσαι ιδιαίτερα με κάποιον, εκτός ίσως του πρωταγωνιστή Jared Padalecki που, έχοντας εμπειρία στο είδος απο την πετυχημένη σειρα Supernatural οπου συμπρωταγωνιστεί, είναι αρκετα καλός στο ρόλο του Clay. Η παρέα των εφήβων μοιάζει, κλασικά, βγαλμένη απο αμερικάνικη χαζοκωμωδία και οι ερμηνείες τους είναι ανεκτές, ανάλογα και με τη συμμετοχή του καθενός. Ο Jason τέλος, ο ουσιαστικός πρωταγωνιστης, αποτελεί με την επιβλητική όπως πάντα παρουσία του ιδανικό “κακό”, αν και η αισθησή μου είναι οτι αυτή τη φορά είναι λίγο παραμελημένος, ίσως φταίει το οτι στις παλιότερες ταινίες σαν παιδί μου φαινόταν πιο εντυπωσιακός.

Τελικό συμπέρασμα: Στο αν η “επαναφορά” του Παρασκευη και 13 είχε κάποιο ιδιαίτερο νόημα, η απάντηση είναι όχι. Μόνο το να θυμηθούμε τη φιγούρα του Jason, κάτι που θα μπορούσε να γίνει κάλλιστα νοικιάζοντας την πρωτότυπη ταινία. Αν ωστόσο είστε φαν του είδους, δε θα χάσετε κάτι αν δείτε το νεο “Παρασκευη και 13”, που δεν είναι μεν τίποτα φοβερό αλλά σίγουρα έχετε δει χειρότερα. Μαζεψτε παρέα, χαμηλώστε τα φώτα, και καλή, αιματοβαμένη, διασκέδαση..

The Last House on the Left (2009)

Η Ιστορία :

Αμερικάνικη οικογένεια, που πριν από ένα χρόνο έχασε το ένα παιδί τους, αποφασίζει να πάει για διακοπές στο εξοχικό τους στο δάσος, διπλά στην λίμνη. Όμως, η κόρη τους πηγαίνει να συναντήσει μια φίλη της που μένει και δουλεύει στην περιοχή και η τύχη τις φέρνει σε γνωριμία με τον γιό ενός ψυχοπαθή εγκληματία.Χωρίς να το ξέρουν, πηγαίνουν στο ξενοδοχείο όπου το παιδί μαζί με τον πατέρα του και τους άλλους δύο συνεργάτες του έμεναν.Έπειτα από το ατυχές αυτό γεγονός τα κορίτσια πέφτουν θύματα απαγωγής και βιασμού από την ομάδα των κακοποιών, η οποία καταφεύγει χωρίς να το γνωρίζει, στο σπίτι στο τέλος του δάσους, όπου και έμεναν οι γονείς του ενός από τα δύο κορίτσια.Εκεί θα καταλάβουν ότι η τύχη δεν είναι με το μέρος τους και με την εκδίκηση να πλησιάζει..

Η Κριτική:

Το The Last House on the Left, αποτελεί την πρώτη “σοβαρή” κινηματογραφική απόπειρα του δικού μας, Ντένη Ηλιάδη. Έπειτα απο το πειραματικό Hardcore, τον βλέπουμε εδώ να επιχειρεί να φέρει πάλι στο κινηματογραφικό πανί, την ταινία ορόσημο του 1972, που τότε είχε σκηνοθετήσει ο Wes Craven.

Τα εμπόδια που είχε να αντιμετωπίσει ο Ηλιάδης ήταν φυσικά πολλά και η δυσκολία αυτών τεράστια. Αυτό γιατί είμαστε σε μια εποχή, όπου οι περισσότερες ταινίες του είδους, προσπαθούν να εντυπωσιάσουν, χρησιμοποιώντας μόνο και μόνο το στοιχείο του αίματος και των “απότομων” σκηνών, κάτι που κατά την γνώμη μου δεν το καταφέρνουν. Έτσι, ο Ηλιάδης βρέθηκε στο στόχαστρο όλων αυτών που θεώρησαν -πριν καν το δούν- το The Last House on the Left μια ακόμα νεανική ταινία τρόμου, με πολύ αίμα και ένταση.

Εδώ όμως είναι και το σημείο όπου ο Ηλιάδης τους διαψεύδει,καταφέρνοντας να βγεί από τα όσα καλούπια κοινό και κριτικοί ήθελαν να τον κλείσουν και να δημιουργήσει, πρώτον ένα πάρα πολύ καλό κοινωνικό δράμα με έντονο το στοιχείο της εκδίκησης και δεύτερον να σταθεί στο ύψος των περιστάσεων, με ένα πολύ αξιόλογο remake.

Σκηνοθετικά η ταινία με εξέπληξε και ειλικρινά άν δεν ήξερα ότι την σκηνοθετεί ένας έλληνας, πιστέψτε με δεν θα το καταλάβαινα. Τα πλάνα της ταινίας είναι ακριβώς όπως θα έπρεπε και η δύναμη τους κορυφώνεται στο μέσο περίπου της ταινίας, όπου όλα δείχνουν ότι αυτό που θα ακολουθήσει θα είναι κάτι το πολύ έντονο και δραματικό.Αυτή η σκηνοθετική ροή έδωσε κατά την γνώμη μου μια σαφώς πιο ευρωπαϊκή χροιά, που όσο και άν προσπαθήσουν οι αμέτρητες αμερικάνικες παραγωγές τέτοιου είδους, δεν θα καταφέρουν να αποδώσουν.

Θέλω να τονίσω εδώ την εξαιρετική φωτογραφία της ταινίας, όπως επίσης και την πολύ όμορφη επιλογή των σκηνικών.Όσον αφορά το cast της ταινίας, το μόνο μου παράπονο αν θέλετε είναι η επιλογή των συγκεκριμένων ηθοποιών για τους ρόλους των δύο συνεργατών του Garret Dillahunt, που άν και καλοί σε σημεία, δεν καταφέρνουν να σε εντυπωσιάσουν όσο θα έπρεπε.Κατα τα άλλα έγινε μια καλή επιλογή, που στο σύνολο της καταφέρνει να συνυπάρξει αρμονικά και πολύ δεμένα δείχνοντας επαγγελματισμό που σπάνια βλέπουμε σε τέτοιες ταινίες.

Η ταινία ακολουθέι μια κλιμακωτή ροή, που, ξεκινώντας από κοινωνικό δράμα, σιγά σιγά εξελίσσεται σε μια ακολουθία σκηνών τρόμου και ψυχολογικών εντάσεων, καταφέρνοντας να κλείσει αυτό το παραμύθι που τόσο όμορφα μας παρουσίασε εδώ ο Ηλιάδης, με μια υπερ-σπλάτερ τελευταία σκηνή. (πολλοί ισχυρίστηκαν ότι ίσως και να μην χρειαζόταν αυτό το τελείωμα, μα πιστεύω πως άξιζε, μιας και μέχρι το σημείο αυτό, σαν θεατής συμπάσχεις με τα γεγονότα και όλο αυτό λειτουργεί σαν λύτρωση )

Το The Last House on the Left αξίζει σίγουρα τα λεφτά του αν αποφασίσετε να πάτε να το δείτε στις αίθουσες, μιας και είναι μια πάρα πολύ αξιόλογη ταινία με όσα στοιχεία χρειάζεται για να σας κάνει να κολλήσετε τα μάτια σας στην οθόνη και να ακολουθήσετε την περιπέτεια των πρωταγωνιστών.

Αλήθεια, εσείς μεχρι πού θα φτάνατε για αυτούς που αγαπάτε;;

My Bloody Valentine (2009)

Ιστορία :

Ο Tom επιστρέφει στην πόλη που γεννήθηκε, 10 χρόνια μετά απο μια σειρά αποτρόπαιων φόνων που είχαν γίνει τη μέρα του Αγίου Βαλεντίνου από έναν εργάτη των ορυχείων. Όταν αρχίζει νέος κύκλος παρόμοιων φόνων, οι υποψίες στρέφονται στον Tom, και η μόνη που πιστεύει στην αθωότητα του είναι η πρώην του.

Κριτική :

Ξεκινώντας να δω την ταινία, δύο πράγματα με απασχολούσαν. Πρώτον, αν θα ανταποκριθεί στο είδος ψυχαγωγίας που περιμένει το κοινό της, σπλάτερ, αγωνία, και όλο το πακέτο μιας τέτοιας ταινίας χωρίς να κουράσει ή να προκαλέσει- πολλά- γέλια. Δεύτερον, αν όλα αυτά μπορεί να τα περάσει χωρίς τη δυναμική του 3D, που είναι το δυνατό χαρτι, και δυστυχώς το μόνο στις περισσότερες περιπτώσεις, των ταινιών που το υποστηρίζουν, καθώς εγω και όσοι δεν την έχουν δει ακόμα, μάλλον θα αρκεστούν στο dvd τους.

Απο νωρίς η ταινία δείχνει οτι θα είναι η χαρα του σπλατερά. Κεφάλια, καρδιές, αίμα και λοιπά ανατομικά προιόντα δίνουν και παίρνουν. Το σενάριο σίγουρα δεν είναι το δυνατό της σημείο,αλλά σε τέτοιες ταινίες δεν περιμένεις κάτι καλυτερο. Η σκηνοθεσία επίσης είναι σχετικά καλή και καταφέρνει σε αρκετές σκηνές να σε βάλει σε ένα κλίμα αγωνίας και φόβου, αν και σκηνικά όπως το ορυχείο ή το δάσος είναι έτσι κι αλλίως αβανταδόρικα για τέτοιο κλίμα. Ένα άλλο θετικό στοιχείο είναι οτι δεν υπάρχει κάποια χαρακτηριστική κοιλιά, εκτός από κάποιους περιττούς διαλόγους. Αυτό που μπορεί να ενοχλήσει είναι η έλλειψη ρεαλισμού σε κάποιες σκηνές, κυρίως όταν η ταινία πλησιάζει στο τέλος της. Και επειδή το τέλος είναι τις περισσότερες φορές το σημαντικότερο κομμάτι και αυτό που σου μένει, προσωπικά δε μου άφησε και την καλύτερη εντύπωση, όχι τόσο όσο αφορά στην υπόθεση, άλλα δίνει μια αίσθηση οτι γυρίστηκε πρόχειρα.

Οι ηθοποιοί σε γενικές γραμμές κυμαίνονται σε ανεκτά επιπεδα. Πιο αναλυτικά, ο Jensen Ackles, στο ρόλο του Tom τα πάει αρκετά καλά, και οι Jaime King και Kerr Smith, που συμπληρώνουν την πρωταγωνιστική τριάδα ως Sarah και σερίφης Palmer αντίστοιχα, είναι επαρκείς στους ρόλους τους. Ευχάριστη έκπληξη είναι η πάρουσια του βετεράνου του είδους Tom Atkins, στο ρόλο του παλιού σερίφη, που με τη χαρακτηριστική φυσιογνωμία του αποτελεί μια ρετρό πινελιά στην ταινία. Τέλος, αναμφίβολα η πιο ενδιαφέρουσα φιγούρα της ταινίας είναι ο δολοφόνος. Με τη στολή του ανθρακωρύχου και ειδικά τη μασκα με το φακό είναι αν μη τι άλλο επιβλητικός και έχει μια μεταφυσική αύρα, ενώ η αξίνα σαν όπλο είναι ότι πρέπει για το είδος της ταινίας (αν και στην πιο εντυπωσιακή σκηνή θανάτου χρησιμοποιεί φτυάρι).

Τελικό συμπέρασμα: Η ταινία κυλάει αρκετά στρωτά και δεν κουραζει ιδιαίτερα τον θεατή. Επιπλέον έχει τα στοιχεία που θα ικανοποιήσουν τους φίλους των ταινίων τρόμου και σπλάτερ, όσοι δεν ανήκουν σε αυτή την κατηγορια ας μην κάνουν καν τον κόπο. Από την άλλη, δεν είναι απο τις ταινίες που θα δεις 2^η φορά, ή που θα θυμάσαι μετά από ένα μήνα. Γενικά είναι μια μέτρια προς καλή ψυχαγώγικη ταινία, με την οποία μπορείτε να περάσετε περίπου μιάμιση ωρα αν δεν έχετε κάτι καλύτερο να κάνετε.

Πίσω από τις κάμερες :

* Η ταινία ειναι remake μιας όχι ιδιαίτερα επιτυχημένης ομώνυμης ταινίας του 1981.

* Τα γυρίσματα έγιναν στην Πενσυλβάνια, λόγω των φορολογικών ελαφρύνσεων που ισχύουν στην περιοχή για τη δημιουργία ταινιών.

* Ο σεναριογράφος Todd Farmer, έχει τον μικρό ρόλο του φορτηγατζή στο μοτέλ.
