There are two kinds of teen films that come to mind. Your shallow, non provocative teen film and then your polar opposite of racy, controversial humor and sex ala American Pie. Both have standouts in the genre and failures. But what if someone was in the mood for something right in the middle? Well don't you worry because Easy A is that kind of film that pushes the boundaries of touchy teen issues without having nudity, profanity and still manages to be a entertaining film.
High school is where we all as teenagers finally starts defining our personality and coming into our own. Sometimes we get it right other times we need revise ourselves like dear old Olive (Emma Stone). The background girl that is brought to the center of high school popularity and notoriety. It all happens when Olive lies about having sex for the first time to her best friend Rhiannon. With a chain of lies circulating the school, Olive goes with the lie instead of against it. The myth she has created around her suits her as she has found a new way of seeing herself and helping others. This wont last for long as she will realize the negative costs of helping people and spreading lies.
Easy A is a very good comedy due to the way it was produced, written and acted. Easy A is very similar to Mean Girls in both being a young girls search of her in-herself and being also the outcast. Their diffrence is that Easy A looks at the slutty and forbidden side of high school instead of Mean Girls look into friendships and cliques.
The film would have been nothing if the level of acting talent was absent. How many times do comedies gt academy award winning actors that usually only do dramas? Not often I might say. But also the taleted young cast all do a remarkable job by fleshing out there characters and fully committing to the intelligent gags making this film memorable.
As all films Easy A is not excluded from having cliches. But non of them ever take you out of the experience of the film. This film may be a little light on laugh out loud comedy but isn't light at all in talent and in heart. Recommended to all teen film lovers.
