The Hurt Locker (2009)

director: Kathryn Bigelow
writer: Mark Boal
starring: Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty
genre: Drama, War

It's weird how movie careers go. Some from the get go get rich and famous. Others just vanish and never get a second chance. Kathryn Bigelow career has had her up's and downs and finally made the best film of her career and until now the best film on the Iraq War. The Hurt Locker is a realistic take on the war in Iraq. The film is apolitical and focuses more on the human side to war then the decisions made in the war rooms.

We follow 3 soldiers and their duties in Iraq. All 3 are apart of a special bomb squad unit, specialized in disarming IED's (Improvised Explosive Device). All 3 of soldiers face diffrent problems and handle the war experience in different ways. Sergeant James (Jeremy Renner) is reckless and a maverick, Sergeant Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) is a boy scout and Specialist Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) is the psychologically frail but committed soldier. The 3 with their troubles and hopes try to survive the war and find out who they really are.

War films sometimes dwell into political areas, which for some are boring, or into action areas which in the other case annoys others. Then there are the films were the focus is on the characters and story and instead of the action. To see the story from their eyes. War for a soldier is not how we see it from the TV. For them and in the case of the soldiers in Iraq, its a duty. Some enlisted for a job and lucked out when the war started, others for pure joy and sadly few as a calling to arms. But a soldier in a war-zone dosent think about the politics. But about the job at hand. They shouldn't be criticized nor blamed. Blame is to be set elsewhere in the hearts of men who make the decisions who sent them there.

Ive already talked about a little about my Oscar thoughts in a previous article of mine on the blog. So let me just say once again that Hurt Locker was one of the films of 2009 that deserved to get the awards. Bigelow's job was exceptionally well done and Hurt locker proved to be one of the big hits of the year.

Now with it's Oscar wins it will get more recognition from the mass and curiosity going for it. Hurt Locker on the big screen will be a delight with many explosions, tense scenery and some the best directed scenes of the year. And please don't think of this as the American hero story. It is not that kind of film. If you want that kind of film go make fun of Rambo and not the Hurt Locker.

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

director: Quentin Tarantino

writer: Quentin Tarantino

starring: Brad Pitt, Melanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth, Michael Fassbender, Diane Kruger, Daniel Bruhl

genre: Action/Drama/War

Review by Gamapi

As a big Tarantino fan I wanted to give my 2 cents about his new film. Didn’t know really what to expect from the trailers, the many casting rumors, casting replacements and the buzz around the film But now just after seeing the film and having a great time, I can say this by far the most entertaining film of the year yet.

Tarantino’s usual trademarks are all over the film from the music, tittle credits, chapters and casting choices. Everything is marvelously done as we've been accustomed to with him. Many who are not fans of Tarantino though for various reasons either because he steals which I believe he dosent but just takes elements from the best and makes something more of it are not going to enjoy this film that much. And then there are the people who think hes should be more of a intellectual in his filmmaking process as European cinema is. Another opinion I have to disagree with. The man is by far one of the best writers of dialogue in cinema history, takes great ideas, concepts and genres and mix's them together to make a great masterpiece. And if making your film entertaining, cool, fun is a sin to cinema then your just not enjoying life. But what I’m trying to get at is that Tarantino is one of the best directors today and its a sad fact that he doesn’t make more films and many people get the wrong impression of his work. But by taking his time he will give us a full and completely satisfying experience.

From the many slow moments in the film to build up tension, to the gritty action sequences with the Bastards or just with the story of Shoshanna's revenge. The whole film is just great. He accomplishes to make us laugh, cringe, to make us feel apart of every conversation as if we were there and fully enjoy the every reaction and movement of the actor. Because this film is exactly that. Full of tension, suspense of whats going to happen and what limits Landa or the Bastards are willing to go. Hitchcock would be proud with this film in my opinion. Inglorious Bastards is not one of Tarantino's best films but is a great film nonetheless. The blood might put you off, the long dialog scenes, the zany plot but if you don’t like any of that, then there no need for you too see this film or any Tarantino film.

Valkyrie (2008)

director: Bryan Singer

writer: Christopher McQuarrie, Nathan Alexander

starring: Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Terence Stamp, Tom Wilkinson

genre: Thriller, War

My good friend gamapi had said in his review of Closing the Ring that there are too many WWII stories turned into films. And he is right there is no need and no apparent market for these films. But that time of history has some of the most intriguing stories that have been told that need to be told or inspire to make fictional stories in that era. There will always be stories coming from this time at least we can hope is that they are good ones. Valkyrie happens to be a good one.

Even though we usually think of the Nazis as the bad guys thats not the case here. Valkyrie is about the struggle of some men within the Nazi party and the German political establishment to bring Hitler down. They came close with Operation Valkyrie. The plan is of Colonel Von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) to kill Hitler and set operation Valkyrie in motion which would let the reserve guard take over all the important location in Berlin and blame it all on the SS. He and other co-conspirators all have a job to do in this plot and different motives leading them to these events but as we all know it didn't go exactly as planned.

Going into this film I didn’t have high hopes. Thought it to be just a simple heist setup film which it is and its very well done. The sets, locations, costumes are all perfect to the era. Effects are very good and feel real. All this help to make this Hollywood film more serious for the fact that they never tried to make history documentary but a entertaining thriller. This is something they used to do in Hollywood more often in the old days get great actors all together in films that just with star value lift up the material so we don’t have to pay much attention too the material.

I did enjoy this film but its no different then heist a film or revenge films with extravagant plans but instead of robbing a bank its killing Hitler. The film relied more on the how it will happen and the aftermath instead more of the problems these men had with Nazi Party and themselves participating in atrocities. We hear from Branagh character "they should know that not all of us were the same" but only a few lines here in there don’t make the story go any deeper and more meaningful. It’s like heist film. Why are you stealing the money because I need it. Its that simple and that why film does not go farther than it could. Also why couldn’t the actors learn German accents. It would have been more realistic and made film even cooler to see Tom Cruise do one even though im not sure if he would accomplish it.

The sad fact about this film is the whole controversy with Scientology. Especially in Germany. Tom Cruise I enjoy his performances as actor in many films even though I don’t enjoy how he parades his religion around but that dosent stop me to see his films. Also people claimed that because he’s in the film that Valkyrie would be riddled with Scientology symbols and make people more aware of the so called religion. Well the people who are afraid are actually the ones making people more aware of the religion. There was no interference on any part with Tom Cruise spreading Scientology on a period piece film also there is no proof that he his ever done that expect in his personal time.

In the end Valkyrie is entertaining film with very good performances that gives a story many may not know of except from a episode of the TV show Highlander (yes if you didn’t know Highlander was a part of the plot even though he is not portrayed in the film). Many such stories have yet to be told on film I just hope that next time Spielberg tackles it or Eastwood because they got the chops to make a richer film in many areas instead of grounding themselves to making a fitter product for the masses.

Waltz with Bashir (2008)

director: Ari Folman
writer: Ari Folman
starring: Ron Ben-Yishai, Ronny Dayag, Ari Folman, Dror Harazi, Yehezkel Lazarov, Mickey Leon, Ori Sivan, Zahava Solomon
genre: Animation, Drama, War
