If there was a specific biopic that I wish to have been made it would be a full blown big budget Beatles film. But for that to happen all the planets of solar system would have to be aligned. For now we have to make due with a small part of John Lennon's life in the wonderful film called Nowhere Boy. This is about John Lennon's youth and the first meetings he had with his fellow Beatles band-mates. But most importanly about his realthionship with his family and mother.

John (Sam Johnson) is 15 years old and a troublemaker. Not good at school and always intersted in getting into trouble one way or another. He lives with his aunt and uncle due his mom's inability to take care of him. This leads John to his Mom and his curiosity to find out what led to this inability and maybe there was a way to rekindle their lost relathionsihp. At the same time this will lead the Lennon family into confrontation and big secrets that will have to be revealed to John. Throughout these events John will learn of his passion for rock and roll and Elvis. Huge influences that will lead him to learning the guitar and creating the Quarrymen which later one day will lead to the legendary band of the Beatles.

The film is filled with dynamic performances and a keen look at the dramatic filled youth of John Lennon. We can see from young his influences and his rebellious side. He was the most controversial member of the Beatles and the most rebellious at youth. But it wasn't in spite of having a destructive family but actually a very loving family that in the end came together instead of tearing apart for young John.

As a drama Nowhere Boy excels in bringing great performances, a interesting look at the young life of John Lennon and plenty of drama that came out of his young life. For Beatles fans this is a great recommendation. Now we just have to wait much a little while longer for a Beatles biopic. If that ever happens...

Black Swan (2010) Review

I absolutely loved Black Swan. I wasn’t sure at first if I would enjoy it and I wasn’t sure what to think. When the movie was over I still wasn’t sure what to think. Despite how that might sound, that is not a criticism, but rather high praise for director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream), and Natalie Portman, who present a movie that is complex, compelling, and never ordinary. It is also one of the year’s best.

The Social Network (2010) Review

The Social Network is not the kind of film I enjoy to review. It's one of those films that you don't have really anything particularly bad to say about it and also not the kind of film that has a defining feature to rave about. You could say that Aaron Sorkin's script is the defining feature but no one is going to be sold on who wrote the script but about how status updates were created.

Brookyln's Finest (2010)

Every year or so there is some kind of dramatic cop film. It's an familiar genre with no need of going away. Most of them aren't bad just not deep enough or smart enough. Case in point Brooklyn's Finest. It's a very good film for what it is but doesn't go far enough to be memorable.

The Room (2003)

Have you ever seen a film where it's so bad that you wonder how was it even possible for it to be created? Time after time you see bad films and you can detect where and why it's bad. You can give it even a little respect due to the fact that it was made in bad taste and for it's professional filmmaking that was at least present. This film is not like that, not even close. It's a film with countless of mistakes, that amateur film students wouldn't even be capable of ever coming close to accomplishing. Watching this film will give you courage in knowing that you will never suck as bad as the man who is behind this monstrosity Tommy Wiseau.

Donnie Darko (2001)

How many films have you have seen that really left you with the simple following thought "what the hell... maybe I should go back and re-watch this, maybe I should read between the lines or maybe i should focus more on the film and let nothing distract my attention to this masterpiece". Well with the exception of the recent masterpiece Inception maybe not that many times do those specific thoughts happen. Donnie Darko is one of those films that requires our attention because of the mystery that surrounds it!

Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) a teenager with some mental disorders who sees a psychiatrist and takes some medication has his life changed after a weird incident. One night he wakes up after hearing some strange voice, he sleepwalks out of his house where he meets a weird giant bunny rabbit Frank(James Duval )that tells him that the world is going to end in in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds while he was out sleepwalking something crashed into his house. The next morning having woke up walks back to his house where he finds it is being surrounded by firemen,the police and his family. His parents and his sisters Elizabeth (Maggie Gyllenhaal yes she is his sister in real life as well) and Samantha (Daveigh Chase) are surprised and happy to see him because a jet engine crashed to his room with no one knows how it really happened or where it came from. Things from there are taking a weird turn where Donnie sees more often Frank where he tells him what he should do changing Donnies personality and somehow manipulating him.

The acting in the film is wonderful as you really feel how troubled is the role of Donnie. In other words Jake Gyllenhaal plays his role damn good !You see him in love with his girlfriend (Jena Malone) you see him troubled being haunted by the nightmares/visions that he is having and you see him going psycho.Overall the whole cast plays great excluding some minor exceptions, but nothing is perfect in this world right?. The movie takes place back in 1988 and director Richard Kelly did a great job representing the late 80s also the soundtrack of film is fantastic!

I could keep writing but that would be a crime as I am keeping you away from such a great film! And I may accidentally throw some spoilers (how accidentally can that be anyway??) so find the movie, turn off the lights and focus on it! It really deserves your attention!

P.S. If anybody has the chance to see this film it would be my recommendation to see the Directors-Cut instead of the theatrical cut. The differences are minor but substantial. Enjoy!

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Stanley Kubrick in his last film gave us a mesmerizing motion picture that makes us wonder of our own intention's, jealousy's and curiosities in the game called love. And where those feelings and thoughts may take us in this weird world that we live in.

We follow the couple of Dr. Bill (Tom Cruise) and Alice (Nicole Kidman) who enjoy a happy and full life. But life that is happy sometimes hides unsatisfactory details. While in bed the both of them have a discussion on affairs and looks. Once Bill finds out of his wife's fantasies for another man his jealousy caves in, that leads him into a odyssey threw out New York. From a encounter with a prostitute on the road to a secret sexual gathering, Bill will have to go through many feelings and realizations for what is his the point of his marriage and what he should truly value and cherish.

The film is misunderstood by many. One of the main reasons was the promotional advertisements of the film before its release. The trailer of the film mislead many people into thinking that it was only about sex. And showing Cruise and Kidman naked just kissing each other how could anyone not think it's just about sex. But anyone who knows of Kubrick's work could have understood that the film must have been deeper than that. The film is not just about sex but more about what revolves around a relationship or marriage. In the film Dr. Bill learns the lesson that trust is the most important factor in a relationship and without it you don't have anything. Also the fact that jealousy, and temptation can be equally damaging to a couple as do lies and deceit. Just the thought of betraying your partner can be the beginning of the end for a relationship.

The film is wonderfully acted by the then married couple Tom Cruise and Kidman. Perfect choices by Kubrick. Their chemistry is outstanding. Cruise should get more recognition for his acting and sadly he gets none due his much publicized private life. Not that he doesn't deserve his share of critique but that's it doesn't have anything to do with some of his great performances.

The film was shot all in England except for some 2nd unit photography shots in New York. The film is supposed to feel like a dream and Kubrick accomplished it with each shot being more mesmerizing than the last. The man was a perfectionist and demanded many takes. The film was shot on a record of 400 days. Also besides the sex in the film many people disliked the New York shots and atmosphere. Something which is quite odd as it's all effect for the protagonists journey. It's a look through Dr. Bill's eyes and psyche of guilt and jealousy not a serious look of how New York city is.

The last chapter in Stanley Kubrick career is a worthy ending to a filmmaker most different than all. Kubrick was a man who gave us classics, caused controversy and a man who sadly is in the special club of never getting a Oscar for directing. Eyes Wide Shut is odd film for many, the nudity, the questions that it asks of us but it's a film unique of it's kind.

Remember Me (2010)

It seems that I've been seeing too many romantic films lately. Either I'm far too much in love or I have a death wish for cliched films. The said film here is what I have been talking about in countless of my reviews. Of a more serious type of romance film, with drama and that is down to earth in many of its aspects. This film for many might be a waste of time due vampire Edward Pattinson being in it. But the film ain't that bad and the film's fault aren't of his fault.

Remember Me is all about Ally (Emile de Ravin) and Tyler (Robert Pattinson). They both have gone through tragedy in their life but still try to move forward. Both have come from tough backgrounds, Tyler's brother committed suicide and Ally's mother died in front of her eyes when she was a child. Both still haunted and affected these events try to enjoy life and fix things for themselves and their families. Tyler and Ally once together seem to have accomplished what they always wanted, love, clarity and peace and a way of moving forward themselves, coming to accord with the past and connecting their family.

The ultimate problem with the film is that it gets its point across and then it makes the mistake of trying to go even deeper in your skin with a even deeper message that i thought it was misplaced within the film and completely unnecessary. I wont spoil it, but keep your mind open for something you wont expect towards the end of the film. Its not the twist of the century but it plays out the ending of the film in a different matter that I didn't understand the necessity for it. The film is about father issues and family coming together. Getting through tragedy and hoping for a better future. Then when you've got the message, the ending gives you a final touch to it which wasn't a bad thing but they way they did it is where many will be puzzled and rightly so.

I managed to enjoy Remember Me. For its performances, for its fresher take on the genre compared to today's romantic films, and for the film to actually have the guts to play it risky instead of playing it safe with its story. Even though I still didnt go bananas for the film I still recommend it.

Metroland (1997)

Romantic films usually miss the point entirely. Focus is always or most usually put on the story of two hated individuals that will eventually fall in love or a love that has a deep secret that has to be revealed so the both can be together. Formulas that Metroland and other serious romance films stray away from by being more original. Analyzing how romance can be boring and how a midlife crisis can play out.

Chris (Christian Bale) is married man in his 30's who's having a midlife crisis. He lives the normal life with a job, child and his wife Marion (Emily Watson) but its not enough for him. Ideas and thoughts follow him day to day and thing only get worse with the arrival of his old friend Toni (Lee Ross). More memories come afloat as he relives his old love life and if he would have been happier living his life differently with one of his old loves or his wife.

What attracted toward the film was its depiction of the main characters Chris and Marion. The in doubt, tempted husband on the brink of midlife crisis and the depressed wife in need of her husband's commitment to the marriage. Their portrayals and performance are what make this film so good.

Also the content matter of the film is very interesting and usually never played out in realistic terms in other romantic films. Things like sexual boredom, past-fantasies, tempting seduction and the change of partners are sometimes too taboo for mainstream audiences that are only in the mood for a fairy tale story. As if the man or woman of the film cant be a in a love and flawed at the same time.

Every time one of these type films actually make it too the cinema it's a blessing. You cant alway be in the mood for a cliche romance film every month or so. Even weird romance films like Sex and Death 101 are a breath of fresh air. This old romance of the 90's is worth your time and patience. So check it out.

Hoffa (1992)

It's been a long time that I have wanted to see this film. As a gangster fan I always was intrigued with Hoffa and his connection to the mob. I didn't really no that much about him except of the fact that he was a union guy, that was in bed with mob and was buried in a football stadium. Which is a common joke in the U.S.. Now seeing the film I have better view on the man, behind the biggest union in U.S. history the Teamsters. Hoffa was a man with a dream and a goal that workers would have rights and not be taken advantage of and would be accomplished no matter who stand in his way.

As you can tell by the title, the film is about Jimmy Hoffa (Jack Nicholson), probably the most important or one of the most important men in American union history. The film follows Hoffa from his start of getting truck drivers to join the Teamsters union, to his fateful fall and prison time. The story is told threw flashbacks threw Hoffa's best firend and confidant Bobby Cicero (Danny De Vito). Bobby remembers all the important events of his life with Hoffa and how Hoffa changed his life and of other workers completely.

The film is directed by Danny De Vito. Here De Vito shows his talent in drama and directing besides the comedy which everybody knows him for. De Vito with Hoffa showed his class in handling a period piece biopic, of a controversial nature. It's sad that after seeing this film De Vito never managed to make something of a similar nature. He did make other very good films like Matilda or War of the Roses but nothing ever close to a historic nature as Hoffa.

Funny fact about this film is how Nicholson managed to get a Golden Globe nomination and an Razzie Nomination (Opposite of Oscars). Its incredible to think that there were two extreme reactions to his, in my opinion great performance. All of the performance as a matter of fact are very good and another bravo to De Vito to his direction of the actors and of his own acting in the film.

Once again im coming back to De Vito again and again in this review. But its because of the great job he did on the film. The way he tells the story and his direction choices that make this film so special and unique. De Vito's transitions, fade in's, flashbacks all help to get us immersed into the film and the period. Ηis storytelling is very much interesting because of the way characters interact with each other in the film. Never do we get ache of emotion or something not integral to the story from the characters. For example a chicle in most biopic films is for the historical person to go to bed at night to his wife and talk about his troubles. None of that kind of stuff is present in Hoffa. Just straight forward essential storytelling.

Hoffa is a visually interesting and intriguing story of a man who's anger got the better of him. Anyone interested in gangster films or even a tiny bit curious about union history in the U.S. should check Hoffa out.

Harry Brown (2009)

Here is a revenge film for anyone who is tired and fed up with our society is shaped up. Michael Caine who at his late age still manages to be the big star he once was. Harry Brown shows us the filth of our society and the man who is fed up and decides to take action in his own hands.

Harry Brown is a simple man. He's lived a good life. Retired and widower. Living the rest of his days playing chess with his mate. All around him though his city is changing with youth gangs and violence. His mate is caught in one of the violent acts one day and passes away. Harry Brown though will not stand down with violent act and show that somebody has to stand up to crime and get revenge.

I thought that film was very captivating. The plight,sadness, and depression of Harry Brown is felt throughout the film. We get to know him and follow him on his dark journey. Its funny how we would never kill a person but gladly follow and rout for a vigilante out for dark justice. The film is pure and simple a revenge film with some social commentary to it. Its pretty simple deep down but gets to the point of our youth that are troubled and helpless, citizens alone and miserable and police that are ignorant and too late to take action.

Id say if you have the chance go and see this film. It wont be for sure playing in any big theaters but going to local one for a Michael Caine film is worth the price of admission. Films don't always have to be about big actions scenes, huge dramatic moments or deep thought processing scenes. Harry Brown is your old style revenge film, that cares about its characters, that is well directed and written and that shows that we should fight back injustice in our society.

The Hurt Locker (2009)

It's weird how movie careers go. Some from the get go get rich and famous. Others just vanish and never get a second chance. Kathryn Bigelow career has had her up's and downs and finally made the best film of her career and until now the best film on the Iraq War. The Hurt Locker is a realistic take on the war in Iraq. The film is apolitical and focuses more on the human side to war then the decisions made in the war rooms.

We follow 3 soldiers and their duties in Iraq. All 3 are apart of a special bomb squad unit, specialized in disarming IED's (Improvised Explosive Device). All 3 of soldiers face diffrent problems and handle the war experience in different ways. Sergeant James (Jeremy Renner) is reckless and a maverick, Sergeant Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) is a boy scout and Specialist Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) is the psychologically frail but committed soldier. The 3 with their troubles and hopes try to survive the war and find out who they really are.

War films sometimes dwell into political areas, which for some are boring, or into action areas which in the other case annoys others. Then there are the films were the focus is on the characters and story and instead of the action. To see the story from their eyes. War for a soldier is not how we see it from the TV. For them and in the case of the soldiers in Iraq, its a duty. Some enlisted for a job and lucked out when the war started, others for pure joy and sadly few as a calling to arms. But a soldier in a war-zone dosent think about the politics. But about the job at hand. They shouldn't be criticized nor blamed. Blame is to be set elsewhere in the hearts of men who make the decisions who sent them there.

Ive already talked about a little about my Oscar thoughts in a previous article of mine on the blog. So let me just say once again that Hurt Locker was one of the films of 2009 that deserved to get the awards. Bigelow's job was exceptionally well done and Hurt locker proved to be one of the big hits of the year.

Now with it's Oscar wins it will get more recognition from the mass and curiosity going for it. Hurt Locker on the big screen will be a delight with many explosions, tense scenery and some the best directed scenes of the year. And please don't think of this as the American hero story. It is not that kind of film. If you want that kind of film go make fun of Rambo and not the Hurt Locker.

Απλά είχα ακούσει κάποια καλά λόγια για την "Στρέλλα", χωρίς να έχω ψάξει παραπάνω στοιχεία. Δεν μου περνούσε, όμως, για κανέναν λόγο από το μυαλό ότι πρόκειται για μια ελληνική ταινία "τύπου Almodovar". Απρόσμενη τρόπη που μου άφησε μια γλυκόπικρη γεύση. Γιατί, ναι, είναι πολύ προχωρημένο αυτό το εγχείρημα, αλλά πρέπει να υπάρχουν ευδιάκριτα όρια μέσα στα οποία θα κινηθεί κάποιος που θα θελήσει να το αναλάβει. Η όλη προσαρμογή που επιχειρείται είναι άκρως αξιόλογη, άλλα σε κάποια κομβικά σημεία ξεφεύγει... Για να σας δώσω μια ιδέα για το τι θα δούμε, έχουμε και λέμε:

Η "Στρέλλα" είναι μια τραβεστί που, περιστασιακά πλέον, εκδίδεται. Ο Γιώργος είναι πρώην τρόφιμος των φυλακών ο οποίος μόλις αποφυλακίστηκε και προσπαθεί να "συνέλθει" στην Αθήνα. Οι δύο τους γνωρίζονται σε ένα ξενοδοχείο και ξεκινούν μια, εκ των πραγμάτων, διαφορετική σχέση από τις άλλες. Το παρελθόν, όμως, και των δύο θα ταράξει τις ζωές τους και θα προκαλέσει ανισορροπίες...

Ένα μπορούμε να πούμε για την σκηνοθεσία: Υπέροχη. Ήταν ακριβώς αυτό που χρειαζόταν η ταινία και, πραγματικά, της έδινε μεγάλη δύναμικη. Οι χώροι ήταν πολύ προσεγμένοι, δίνοντας, όπως αναφέρθηκε και παραπάνω, την αίσθηση ότι βλέπεις Almodovar. Όλη αυτή η πολυχρωμία του χώρου, το έντονο καλλιτεχνικό στοιχείο που προσπαθούσε ο σκηνοθέτης να απεικονίσει, καθώς και η άμμεση και έμμεση τραγικότητα, χάριζαν πολλά κιλά πρωτοπορίας και φιλοσοφημένης σκηνοθετικής άποψης. Σε αυτή την μαγική εικόνα που προσπαθούμε να φτιάξουμε, έρχονται και τα "όρια" που λέγαμε... Έστω, ότι είμαστε εύστοχοι στον παραλληλισμό που κάναμε με τον Almodovar. Ο τελευταίος έχει την τάση να κάνει διάφορες σκηνές από τις ταινίες του σε επαρχιακές πόλεις της Ισπανίας. Όπως γίνεται κατανοητό, αν και εδώ γίνει αντιγραφή αυτής της άποψης χωρίς κανένα μέτρο, μπορεί να χαθεί λίγο ο μπούσουλας. Σε αυτό, λοιπόν, το σημείο ήταν που έχανε η ταινία. Βέβαια, εδώ δεν φταίει μόνο ο σκηνοθέτης, αλλά και το σενάριο. Για να σας δώσω να καταλάβετε: Φανταστέιτε να βλέπατε την ισπανική εκδοχή και να σας έλεγαν ότι ο πρωταγωνιστής κατάγεται από ένα γραφικό χωριό δίπλα από τη Γρανάδα, και να έρχεστε τώρα στην ελληνική και ο πρωταγωνιστής να έχει γεννηθεί και μεγαλώσει σε ένα χωριό κοντά στην Τρίπολη (δεν θέλω να προσβάλλω κανέναν που πιθανώς να κατάγεται από εκείνα τα μέρη, προς Θεού). Δεν λέω, όλα εξυπηρετούν κάποιο σκοπό. Και θα ήταν λάθος να κάνουμε απόλυτη ταύτιση του ισπανικού κινηματογράφου και του ελληνικού σε τέτοιου είδους φιλμς. Αλλά, όσο να'ναι...

Όσον αφορά την ηθοποιία, τώρα, δεν μπορώ να πω ότι ενθουσιάστηκα κιόλας... Ήταν στιγμές που ήταν καλή και κάποιες άλλες που χαλούσε πάρα πολύ. Σε λίγα σημεία έφτασε το αρκετά ικανοποιητικό. Δεν είμαι επαγγελματίας του χώρου, αλλά όσο να'ναι κάποια πράγματα είναι οφθαλμοφανή. Παρόλ' αυτά, αυτός ο τομέας δεν καταστρέφει την ταινία. Αν δεν υπήρχε αυτή η μετριότητα σαφώς τα πράγματατα θα ήταν καλυτερα, αλλά και τώρα που την συναντάμε, δεν φτάνουμε σε σημείο να καταριόμαστε την ώρα και τη στιγμή που βγάλαμε τα χρήματα από το πορτοφόλι μας για να τα δώσουμε στον/ην ταμία. Στην γοητεία των ηθοποιών συνέβαλε τα μέγιστα και το ότι το μακιγιάζ τους ήταν ελάχιστο. Αυτή την φυσικότητα σε αυτό το βαθμό την έψαχνα πολύ καιρό σε μια ακόμα ταινία. Και χάρηκα που επιτέλους την βρήκα και ξανάδα τα αποτελέσματά της.

Πραγματικά, η ταινία είναι κάτι για να θυμάσαι. Πολύ extreme σκηνές και αρκετά "ψαγμένα" πλάνα. Παρά το γεγονός ότι δεν αποτελεί και το τελειότερο φιλμ, αξίζει τα χρήματά της πιστεύω. Αυτό, σαφώς, δεν εκμαιεύεται από το υπόλοιπο κείμενο, αλλά νομίζω ότι θα συμφωνήσετε μαζί μου όταν την δείτε. Αν δεν θέλετε να ρισκάρετε πηγαίνοντας σε έναν κινηματογράφο, αξίζει να την νοικιάσετε όταν κυκλοφορήσει.

Η ανθρωπιά και η έννοια της φιλίας είναι κάτι πολυσυζητημένο την σημερινή εποχή. Αυτό το γεγονός με κάνει να προβληματίζομαι πολύ για το πώς να μιλήσω για κάτι τέτοιο… Σαφώς δεν είμαι κάποιος εδικός, αλλά κανένας από εμάς δεν χρειάζεται ειδική μόρφωση ή συστάσεις για να εκφράσει προβληματισμούς και συναισθήματα. Παρά το γεγονός ότι ζούμε σε μια εποχή που όλα μπορούν, θεωρητικά κι πρακτικά, να συμβούν, με την τόση πια πληροφόρηση από την οποία κατακλυζόμαστε και την πανεύκολη πρόσβαση σε αυτή, ξεχνάμε τα βασικά. Κάποιοι άλλοι είναι εκεί, όμως, για να μας τα θυμίζουν. Όσο θα υπάρχει η τέχνη, τα πράγματα θα είναι πιο λυρικά και μαγικά. Και ευτυχώς η τέχνη θα υπάρχει παντοτινά… Για να μην ξεφεύγουμε πολύ από το τι θέλουμε να προσφέρουμε μέσω αυτού του blog, στα της ταινίας άμεσα.

Ο Max είναι ένας 44χρονος, αυτιστικός Νεοϋορκέζος. Η Mary είναι ένα 8χρονο κοριτσάκι από την Αυστραλία. Τελείως τυχαία, ξεκινούν να αλληλογραφούν και να αναπτύσσουν, σιγά-σιγά, την πιο αθώα και αληθινή φιλία. Πολλά σκαμπανεβάσματα θα υπάρξουν. Το θέμα είναι αν θα πραγματοποιήσουν το μεγαλύτερο όνειρό τους: ο καθένας τους να αποκτήσει έναν πραγματικό φίλο…

Πάντα, τα animation φιλμς έχουν κάτι το πολύ ιδιαίτερο. Μια γοητεία που σπάνια βρίσκει κανείς. Δεν ξέρω αν φταίει το ότι κρατούν μια παιδικότητα κρυμμένη ή αναδεικνύουν μια διαφορετική πλευρά της 7^ης τέχνης, αλλά παραμένουν παραμυθένια. Αυτό το «στερεότυπο» καλείται να ξεπεράσει το «Mary and Max». Και τα καταφέρνει πολύ καλά.

Ο Adam Elliot κρατά το κλασσικό στυλ οπτικοακουστικής αναπαράστασης που συναντούμε και στο “Harvie Krumpet”. Πολύ ιδιαίτερες φιγούρες και πολύ καλοστημένο σκηνικό. Εξάλλου, αυτά είναι και τα στοιχεία που αποτελούν κομβικό σημείο για μια ταινία animation. Η δουλειά που έχει γίνει είναι άψογη και μπορεί να βάλει την προσωπική της σφραγίδα στον καθένα. Το γενικότερο «στήσιμο» μου θύμισε λίγο τον Αρκά. Στις περίφημες εισαγωγές των άλμπουμ του αναφέρεται χαρακτηριστικά ότι σε όλα τα πρόσωπα μπορεί κανείς να διακρίνει την θλίψη που προέρχεται από το σύνολο του κοινωνικού περιβάλλοντος μέσα στο οποίο ζει και δραστηριοποιείται το κάθε άτομο. Ευτυχώς ή δυστυχώς, το ίδιο ισχύει κι εδώ.

Σεναριακά, τώρα, δεν γίνεται να κάνει κάποιος αρνητικά σχόλια. Λεπτομέρεια στο έπακρο και φοβερή συμμόρφωση με το εκάστοτε νοητικό υπόβαθρο του προσώπου στο οποίο απευθυνόταν στο σενάριο. Πιστεύω, είναι αρκετά απαιτητικό το να σχεδιάσεις μια ταινία η οποία απευθύνεται αποκλειστικά σε ενήλικες, αλλά πρέπει να περικλείει την σωστή «ποσότητα» παιδικότητας και αθωότητας. Συγκινητική δουλειά…

Η καλύτερη ταινία που έχω δει φέτος και μια από τις καλύτερες που έχω δει ποτέ στη ζωή μου. Νομίζω ότι θα ήταν πολύ καλό να τη δείτε το συντομότερο δυνατό. Προσφέρει πολλά συναισθήματα και εντάσεις. Δυστυχώς, κάποιες λέξεις πολλές φορές δεν μπορούν να περιγράψουν ένα συναίσθημα και να το κάνουν απόλυτα ξεκάθαρο. Έτσι και η κριτική δεν είναι τόσο μεγάλη. Αλλά, γι’ αυτό η ζωή έχει αυτό το όνομα. Να κρατάτε τις χαρές, να θυμάστε τις λύπες. Προσδοκώ σε μια κοινωνία που κάποια στιγμή θα μπορέσει να εκφράσει αυτά που νιώθει. Να δείξει τον τρόπο που σκέφτεται, που θα ήθελε να ζει και να αναπνέει. Σίγουρα μπορούμε να το κάνουμε αυτό, αλλά το θέμα είναι το πότε. Πάντα είσαι νέος…

Συνήθως, όταν ακούμε για μια ταινία βιογραφικού περιεχομένου, περιμένουμε να δούμε την ζωή του κεντρικού προσώπου - από την στιγμή της γέννησης του μέχρι το τέλος της - να ξετυλίγεται μπρoστά στο φακό αυτοτελώς. Σε κάποιες άλλες περιπτώσεις, βέβαια, οι ταινίες αυτές εστιάζουν σε κάποιο ή κάποια περιστατικά του κύκλου ζωής του ατόμου με το οποίο σχετίζονται. Το "Creation" μπορούμε να πούμε ότι ανήκει στην δεύτερη κατηγορία,

με σημαντικά σημεία διαφοροποίησης όμως, που δίνουν την εντύπωση του εντελώς νέου. Για να γίνουμε λίγο πιο σαφείς, το θέμα του φιλμ έχει ως εξής:

Ο Charles Darwin, έπειτα από πολλή μελέτη του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος και της όλης ζωής που αυτό χαρίζει και φιλοξενεί, είναι έτοιμος να συγγράψει το έργο του "On The Origins Of Species". Ο θάνατος της κόρης του, όμως, θα φέρει πολύ πίσω αυτή του την προσπάθεια και, παράλληλα, θα τον μετατρέψει σε σκιά του εαυτού του. Μέσα σε ένα περιβάλλον διαρκούς σύγκρουσης με τους γύρω του και με τον ίδιο του τον εαυτό, μένει μόνο να δούμε το πώς θα καταφέρει να ολοκληρώσει αυτό το επαναστατικό έργο.

Μιας και η συγκεκριμένη "ιστορία" τοποθετείται πολλά χρόνια πριν, ήταν φυσικό επακόλουθο ο σκηνοθέτης να δώσει στο σκηνικό και στην ατμόσφαιρα που θέλει να δημιουργήσει έναν διαφορετικό αέρα. Όλη αυτή η αριστοκρατική κατάσταση που επικρατούσε εκείνη την εποχή απεικονίζεται με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο. Η εικόνα είναι "πεντακάθαρη", στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ταινίας, και στα καίρια σημεία του έργου αποτυπώνει πλήρως ακόμα και την συναισθηματική κατάσταση των ηθοποιών που βρίσκονται στο πλάνο. Επειδή η ταινία έχει να κάνει, όπως αναφέρθηκε και πιο πάνω, με την φύση, είναι λογικό σε κάποια λίγα σημεία να θυμίζει ντοκιμαντέρ. Αυτό, φυσικά, το παρατηρούσε κάποιος σε μικρό βαθμό, αλλά σε σημείο που ταίριαζε απόλυτα με την ροή και το συνολικό πλαίσιο (π.χ. η αποσύνθεση ενός μικρού πουλιού).

Διαβάζοντας τα ονόματα των πρωταγωνιστών (τουλάχιστον τα δύο από τα τρία που έχουν γραφεί εδώ), δεν χρειάζεται να κάνουμε κάποια ιδιαίτερη σύσταση. Ο Paul Brettany (παίζει τον Charles Darwin) μας είναι ήδη γνωστός από τις ταινίες "A Beautiful Mind", "Dogville" και "Da Vinci Code". Προσωπικά μου είχε κάνει την μεγαλύτερη εντύπωση στον Κώδικα Ντα Βίντσι (δεν κατάφερε, όμως, να σώσει την ταινία...), αλλά δεν ήταν ο ηθοποιός για τον οποίο θα "έτρεχα" να δω κάποια νέα ταινία που συμμετάσχει. Στο "Creation", όμως, "δίνει ρέστα". Εξαιρετική ερμηνεία σε όλες τις πτυχές του ρόλου, καμία υπερβολή και ιδανικό ταίριασμα. Η Jennifer Connelly (η γυναίκα του Δαρβίνου) ήταν απλά καλή. Δεν θεωρώ ότι κουράστηκε πολύ για να έχει την απόδοση που είχε. Για κανέναν λόγο, όμως, δεν χαλάει την ταινία. Ακόμα και με αυτή της την ερμηνεία, η ταινία παραμένει πολύ καλή. Ευχάριστη έκπληξη αποτελεί η μικρή Martha West. "Σήκωσε" όλο το βάρος της κόρης του Δαρβίνου και, γενικότερα, χειρίστηκε ώριμα τον ρόλο της.

Είναι, μάλλον, δύσκολο να είσαι δημιουργικός και ισορροπημένος σε έναν κόσμο ο οποίος είναι εναντίον σου. Ιδιαίτερα όταν οι ίδιες του οι αξίες στηρίζονται σε μη σταθερά θεμέλια, η προκατάληψη γίνεται ακόμα πιο έντονη. Είναι προσωπικό σου θέμα το πως θα βρεις την δύναμη να νικήσεις τους φόβους σου και να πείσεις το περιβάλλον σου για κάτι το τελείως ανατρεπτικό. Προτείνω να δέιτε την ταινία όχι μόνο για την καλλιτεχνική πλευρά της, αλλά και για την επιμορφωτική. Δεν πιστεύω ότι θα νιώσετε, ας πούμε, "ξενερωμένοι" μετά το τέλος της..!

Όπως κι αν έχει, καλή ταινία εύχομαι..!

Η Ιστορία:

Βρισκόμαστε στην Αλάσκα και συγκεκριμένα στην πόλη Nome, όπου ενώ θυμίζει μια οποιαδήποτε άλλη πόλη, είναι η μήτρα περίεργων δραστηριοτήτων και ανεξήγητων φαινομένων. Τις τελευταίες τέσσερις δεκαετίες είχαν παρατηρηθεί εξαφανίσεις ανθρώπων ,δολοφονίες και αυτοκτονίες χωρίς κάποιο συγκεκριμένο μοτίβο ή λόγο για κάτι τέτοιο. Κυρίαρχο πρόσωπο της ιστορίας μας είναι η ψυχολόγος Abbey Tyler , που έπειτα από τον τραγικό και συνάμα ανεξήγητο θάνατο του άντρα της (και αυτός ψυχολόγος) , προσπαθεί να ξανασταθεί στα πόδια της. Όμως παρατηρεί κάτι το περίεργο κατά την διάρκεια της ψυχανάλυσης σε άτομα της πόλης, τα οποία ενώ είχαν έρθει σε αυτήν για προβλήματα διαταραχής ύπνου έκρυβαν κάτι το αλλόκοτο, τρομαχτικό και ανεξήγητο αν θέλετε. Έπειτα από μια ακολουθία συνταραχτικών γεγονότων, τα οποία κάνουν ακόμα και τον πιο σκεπτικιστή να θέλει να ψαχτεί ακόμα παραπάνω, η ψυχολόγος προσπαθεί να βρει την άκρη του νήματος που ξετυλίγει το υπερφυσικό αυτό κουβάρι , όμως θα καταλάβει ότι δεν είναι και τόσο εύκολο.. Το The Fourth Kind είναι βασισμένο σε αληθινή ιστορία και ίσως μία από τις πιο περίεργες στην μελέτη μεταφυσικών φαινομένων και ψυχολογικών μελετών.

Η Κριτική:

Πάρα πολλοί βγήκαν να πουν ότι το The Fourth Kind θα είναι μια φτηνή απομίμηση του Paranormal Activity και ότι βγήκε τώρα για να προσπαθήσει να κλέψει λίγη από την δόξα του. Χωρίς όμως να προσπαθήσω να χρυσώσω το χάπι, πιστεύω πως όσοι μιλούσαν για κάτι τέτοιο, απλά δεν έχουν ιδέα για του τι λένε. Αυτό που συνδέει τις δύο ταινίες είναι μόνο και μόνο το πέπλο του ανεξήγητου και τίποτε άλλο.

Προσωπική μου γνώμη είναι (και μιας και ήμουν αυτός που έτυχε να κάνει κριτική και στις δύο αυτές ταινίες) ότι και οι δύο τους ήταν από τις πιο όμορφες εκπλήξεις τις τελευταίας χρονιάς, η κάθε μία με τον δικό της ξεχωριστό τρόπο. Αυτό σας το λέει κάποιος που ποτέ του δεν ήταν φανατικός οπαδός των ταινιών τρόμου και κάποιος που πάντα έβρισκε κάτι που δεν έστεκε, είτε σκηνοθετικά είτε λογικά.

Όπως ανέφερα και πριν, το The Fourth Kind είναι βασισμένο σε αληθινή ιστορία και αυτό ήταν κάτι που ο σκηνοθέτης δεν φοβήθηκε να δείξει στο έπακρον. Καθ' όλη την διάρκεια της ταινίας ο θεατής βλέπει είτε αυτούσιες, είτε σε παραλληλία με το έργω σκηνές από τα πραγματικά γεγονότα που συνέβησαν τότε, όπως επίσης και μια συνέντευξη της πραγματικής πρωταγωνίστριας,που κατά την γνώμη μου το κάνει ακόμα πιο τρομαχτικό (αν δείτε τις σκηνές αυτές θα καταλάβετε τι εννοώ...).

Η Jovovich που υποδύεται την ψυχολόγο Abbey Tyler καταφέρνει να σταθεί επάξια στον δύσκολο αυτόν ρόλο και λέω δύσκολο γιατί έπρεπε να φέρει στα μέτρα της μια τόσο ιδιαίτερη ψυχολογικά προσωπικότητα και από την άλλη, μέσω των real-life σκηνών έπρεπε να φανεί όσο πιο πιστευτή μπορούσε. Πάντα την συμπαθούσα σαν ηθοποιό και στο The Fourth Kind δεν με απογοήτευσε, αν και σε καμία περίπτωση δεν ήταν ρόλος που κάνει την διαφορά. Το υπόλοιπο cast παίζει αξιοπρεπέστατα και ειδικά οι ασθενείς της, οι οποίοι είναι λες και έχουν στα αλήθεια κάποιο πρόβλημα..

Όσον αφορά την σκηνοθεσία η ψήφος μου είναι θετική, μιας και φαίνεται σε όλη την ταινία το πόσο πάλεψε όλο το συνεργείο να την κάνει να φανεί όσο πιο ρεαλιστική γινόταν και να μην “περάσει” ως μια ταινία θρίλερ του σωρού, που το μόνο της ιδιαίτερο χαρακτηριστικό ήταν το ότι είναι βασισμένη σε αληθινά γεγονότα. Τα πλάνα του Osunsanmi είναι απόκοσμα και συνάμα επιβλητικά και ο τρόπος που τα έχει συνδέσει είναι αρτιότατος , ακόμα και αν η ταινία διαρκεί μόνο μιάμιση ώρα .Αυτό είναι κατά την γνώμη μου ίσως και το πιο δύσκολο κομμάτι σε μια ταινία τρόμου.

Το The Fourth Kind με έκανε να μείνω προσκολλημένος στην οθόνη σε όλη του την διάρκεια και σίγουρα μετά από το τέλος του ο ύπνος δεν ήταν και τόσο εύκολη υπόθεση..Δεν είναι το θρίλερ της δεκαετίας, ούτε και μια από τις καλύτερες ταινίας της χρονιάς. Καταφέρνει όμως πάρα μα πάρα πολύ καλά να περάσει τα μηνύματα που θέλει και να κάνει ακόμα και τον πιο “δύσκολο” θεατή να πεταχτεί από την θέση του σε αρκετές σκηνές. Είναι μια ταινία που σας προτείνω ανεπιφύλαχτα, ειδικά αν σας αρέσει η μίξη του μεταφυσικού με την κλασσική συνταγή ενός καλοδουλεμένου θρίλερ. Είναι μια ταινία που αξίζει πάρα πολύ για σινεμά με καλή παρέα και γερά νεύρα..
