N.D. anti-cohabitation law repealed

BISMARCK, N.D. - Unmarried couples who live together in North Dakota will no longer be considered criminals after the House agreed Thursday to repeal the law that has been on books since statehood.

Representatives voted 48-41 to get rid of the law that lists a man and woman living together without being married as a sex crime, along with rape, incest and adultery.

The legislation creates a new offense, making it illegal for a man and woman to pass themselves off as being married for the purpose of committing fraud. It keeps the penalty of a 30-day jail sentence and a $1,000 fine.

North Dakota is one of seven states that bars a man and woman from cohabitating. Florida, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia have similar laws.

Wow, it's a real kick in the head to realize that there are states more backwards than Oklahoma! I could never vote for anyone that supports these kinds of laws, but I guess the voters of six states feel differently. Maybe it just doesn't come up that much but I remember North Carolina arresting someone for that not too long ago.
It's a good feeling knowing my home state isn't the most backwards on everything but it's also a little scary.
