Ever wondered how it is to be a clerk? How it feels, what are your dilemmas? Well the movie Clerks pretty much shows the whole picture of how it is to be a clerk! This one is Kevin Smiths first movie and a pretty good one i might add!
Dante (Brian O'Halloran) works as a clerk at a convenience store in New Jersey. Next to the store where he works there is a video store where his best friend Randal (Jeff Anderson) works. The movie starts when Dante receives a phone call by his employer that he has to work on Saturday when Saturday is his day off but this is only the start of the problems that are about to come. His girlfriend Veronica (Marylinn Chigliotti) reveals some things about the past that Dante doesn't like, the customers are annoying as hell and his boss wont show up before Dante's hokey game.
What really got my attention was the fact that the movie is in black and white and that is because of the limited budget that Kevin Smith had at the time. Even with a low budget he movie delivers so many messages, laughs and moments that other movies with a huge amount of budget and advertising fail to deliver. The movie is separated with chapters each one with a funny title that informs us what is about to follow. I must say that the pace of how the movie rolls and connects each chapter is amazing given the fact that the events are taking place all on a single day. Most of time the movie takes place inside the convenience store where different stuff happens but my God is so close to reality. There is also a nice feeling of the 90's in the air.
Clerks definitely is worth your time, its funny, smart, original and represents faithfully the life of us who are working as clerks. Kevin Smiths first movie wont let you down. The truth about how people react and what people do when they have to work without really wanting to and messing up their schedule because of their jobs or come to a dilemma between responsibily and what really they would like to do is all there. Thats all from me now go and enjoy a great and smart comedy.
