Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010) Review

director: David Yates

writer: Steve Kloves

starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint

genre: Adventure, Fantasy

Let's just get this out of the way there will never be a great film based on a Harry Potter book. Many people who are not fans and of course have not read the book might have a different opinions based on the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I. Some say they wanted to see the whole movie together instead of watching part I and part II. Personally I agree with that, but there is a reason why they made the movies in parts. Besides getting more profit but also to keep all of us in the loop of what is going to happen next (trust me it’s worth waiting for)! Suspicion will drive you crazy for those who have not read the books. My advice is wait to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

Despite a few narrative threads and character arcs left dangling in the transfer, the film is by far one of the best of the series and absolutely the funniest and most human. The film is based on the Harry Potter series which is set to be a magical world with everything happening for the sake of saving Harry Potter life (Daniel Radcliffe). However it is set away from the school of magic and is all about the adventures of the three protagonists Harry, Ron and Hermione as they set out in search of the Horcruxes, the keys that are responsible for Voldermort’s immortality. The Hogwarts background is done away with in this movie, as Dumbledore is dead and the ministry of magic is no longer allowed to thrive in Hogwarts. Thought the adventures of the three begin. On the way to look for Horcruxes, Harry and his two friends accidently stumble on to the Deathly Hallows secret legend. According to the tale if the legend would come true then Voldermort could ultimately get hold of the power that he has been looking for all these years.

Though, it becomes very important for Harry and his two friends Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) to quickly find the Horcruxes. In the process Harry has to forget everything dear to him including his love for Ginny Weasely (Bonnie Wright). However the road to the adventurous hunt for the Horcruxes there are moments of jealousy amongst the three friends, doubts, and ultimate victory of love.

The adventure unfolds without a dull moment and which makes the viewer by the end want to see Part II as soon as possible to know how Harry and his friends ultimately win over the evil forces. ‘The Deathly Hallows part I is by far the greatest movie in the series in my opinion, simply because it stayed true to the story. The acting was very good as with the rest of the movies and the effects were great. There were sad bits, jumpy parts and cute moments. I'd say it had something for all tastes. Also, Helena Bonham Carter gives yet another stunning performance as the more than slightly unhinged Bella Tricks. She is an excellent actress and really brings the insanity to the film in such an entertaining way. And as for our much loved trio, Harry, Hermione and Ron - well, they're on form as always and the actors have a great on-screen chemistry that really delivers.

So what you have, in the end, is a good film that simply fails to seal the deal with an ending that brings some closure, while suggesting the best is yet to come. So, for now, we'll all just have to wait for next summer and the climax of Deathly Hallows part II. So to my Dear Harry Potter fans don’t miss the change of not seeing it. You will enjoy it as much as I have no doubt and have thoughts on seeing it a second time. For the non fans of Harry Potter and the not interested in reading the books, my message to you is simply: Don't Judge a Movie by Its Cover.
