X-Men: First Class (2011) Review

director: Mathew Vaughn

writers: Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz, Sheldon Turner

starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon

genre:Action, Adventure, Comics

When i first saw the trailer for this movie i was skeptical. I didn't really like Wolverine Origins as i thought it was unnecessary. So i asked myself is it necessary to do an "origin" story for all X-MEN now? I was never really into the X-MEN comics although i enjoyed the animated series when i was younger and the first 2 movies which i found to be also pretty good. But this movie just blew my mind it was truly "AMAZING". It is hands down the best X-MEN movie someone can see today from all points of view.

So why First class? Well X-Men fist class is all about the first steps of some famous X-Men like Professor Xavier (James MaCavoy), Magneto (Michael Fassebender), Beast along with other famous X-Men heroes and villains such as Banshee, Mystique, Havoc , Frost etc. Through the story we are going to find out how did they start and how each and everyone followed a path of choices to become the Hero or Villain we know today. I wont go into much details of whats really happening since i don't want to give away any spoilers and i strongly suggest all of you people that are reading this review right now to go and watch the movie! It is truly worth your time.

The acting is just amazing and really well done and so is the dialogue James McAvoy does an amazing job playing Charles Xavier/professor Xavier at the early years, same can be said for Michael Fassbender who plays the role of Eric Lehnsherr/Magneto. There is a great dynamic performance between the two protagonists of what is their goal that each one of them has and the struggle that each one of the mutants is facing against the rest of the world. Of course a good superhero action movie comes always with a Bad Ass villain and this is where Kevin Bacon comes to fill the picture. His role as Sebastian Shaw a Mutant Ex-Nazi Doctor is just amazing he is like the Magneto of that era but more ruthless should i say. The guy wants to start a WW3 and eliminate all humans doesn't get more bad ass to me than that.

As an action film i don't think it can get any better that this. It has all the elements of an award winning movie epic such as story, dialogue, performances and of course lots of action. For comics fans and MARVEL/X-Men fans it's a must see! Forget what you knew about Wolverine Origins. This is a must see! As for those who would like a good action movie you better go and watch it right now ladies and gentlemen.

After a terrible Wolverine film, and with Marvel Studios paving the way of how to do their own projects. Pressure has been put strongly on studios not only to make good comic book films but also to put specific ones out fast. Due to the fact of a clause in the contracted deals between Marvel and said studios if they dont make a film every 5 years or so with one of Marvel's properties. X-Men 4 or First Class was fast tracked to production due to this and the consequences could have been dire. Instead of getting another X-Men 3 or Wolverine, First Class shows true comic book epicnesss in its plot, characters and action sequences and being one the best films this summer.

The choice of not only returning the film to its comic book roots of the 1960's but also combining it with historical events was a perfect idea and just want the franchise needed. A more epic and cataclysmic storyline, a different adversary in Sebastian Shaw, as I already said period but also more cruccialy difrfrent tone and attitude. This X-Men film is more violent, epic and takes itself more seriously then franchises previous films.

As fellow reviewer GL said this might be the best X-Men film made. The primary reason is the fact that it not only focuses correctly on the right characters, but it also develops sub characters correctly and puts emphasis on the team, its troubles and its training. The other X-Men films were mostly about Xavier, Magneto and Wolverine with everyone else tagging along.

Due to this film being sped up to production this could have gone the wrong way with a very terrible film. Fortunately Matthew Vaughn (the original director for X-Men 3) did a marvelous job and handled the film perfectly. The tone, setting, acting and story direction are not only focused but a step to the other X-Men films.

I do have my small gripes with the film. It does have some minor continuity issues. Some can be considered retconed events, making the story in turn a bit better than the previous films. Or otherwise can be also attributed to the mess Wolverine Origins made. Nonetheless it dosent make the film any worse and the changes from the comic books are not terrible. Comic book fans will notice them and probably not go too crazy I believe. I personally didn't as I understood there was no way of getting it right to the detail once this was a prequel to a franchise that has differed to a already great length from the original comic book property.

To conclude First Class is another great comic book film with great action, drama and effects. Director Matthew Vaughn does a great job of pulling together a convoluted franchise together, focusing the film on the right characters and formulating a good story that in the end shows that a film franchise can move on without its biggest and coolest character (Wolverine)
