I Love You Man (2009)

director: John Hamburg

writers: John Hamburg, Larry Levin

starring: Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rashida Jones

genre: Comedy, Romance

I Love You Man instead of being the classic romantic comedy of man and a woman connecting, its how that it’s equally important for two guys two connect and that friendship is as important as love.

Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) is a great guy with a good real estate job and a great wife to be Zooey (Rashida Jones). But something missing from his life, a man. He has no guy friends none except family and co-workers. When he realizes that this is not a normal thing with pressure from Zoe and family he sets his sight to find the man of his life. While searching and being buddies with many people finding a best friend is not easy and people want different things from each other. But then comes the ever wonderful Sydney (Jason Segel) a cool dude who shows Peter how to have fun again and live life to the fullest. But as great friendships have benefits they also have negatives as they cross with your personal life and priorities and lifestyles have to be set.

Many people might like this film instead of the classic looking for love of your life but your friend. We forget friends are equally important as partners sometimes. And the film shows the problems and greatness of friendship in realistic terms. The only people that will be put off from this film are people like my Mom who will not like the profanity level in the film which is high but also high in quality. The jokes are good and original and romance factor never gets too cheesy or mopey.

But a film can’t only be meanings and jokes but also performances. The acting capabilities of the leads Paul Rudd and Jason Segel make the film ever so watchable. The chemistry between them just booms off the screen and you just want them to say gross things and rock to Rush songs as they do in the film. Also the supporting cast keeps the rest of the film alive with the likes of Lou Ferringo, Andy Samberg, Jon Favreau, Jaime Presley and that just lifts the comedic laughter to greater heights.

I Love You Man is the kind of comedic and romantic material that I enjoy. Intelligent writing, witty jokes, great actors make this into a great recommendation for a fun time. This with the Hangover and Bruno are probably the best comedies of they year so don’t miss out.
