Now that the Oscars are over did everything go well? Did the Academy do a better job than previous years or did they still forget people once again?
Compared to other years the Oscars wasn't a night of bitterness. Other years Oscar voters decisions left many bitter and disfranchised with the Awards ceremony. This year the hype changed towards the end to the Hurt Locker. Glad of this outcome and that didn't sway back to Avatar. But was the night always a two sided fight? Sadly yes.
Hollywood and Academy voters are very one minded, conservative and terribly naive in their choices. The serious war drama and the big 3D James Cameron spectacle were the only choices in their mind and we all knew that. But why? Was Inglorious Basterds that bad? Personally Basterds was my favorite film of the year. But would voters vote for a bloody, retelling of history? Would they vote for a stylized, tense, Tarantino film. They didnt when they had the chance with Pulp Fiction, would they now.
Beside Basterds the other films chosen were ok films but nothing of superb quality. If anyone believed the Blinde Side had a chance of winning was smoking something very strong. But the film on that list that deserved the award as much as Basterds and Hurt Locker was Up. But the day the Academy gives it to a bloody/stylized film, a deep superhero film or a animated film thats the day when pigs fly.
Last i would like to mention the omissions of the Academy. Films that were forgoten this year, like Where the Wild Things Are and 500 Days of Summer. Incredible films that were snuffed due to their indie aspect and because films like Avatar and the Blind Side made more money and buzz.
Essentially the 82nd Academy Awards went well. No big upsets nor gripes. Wish every year was the same. But thats too much to ask..
