It's odd how some people have extremely loony ideas on what should be made into a film. And then questions arise when the film comes out. Why was it made? who financed it? and who is the target demographic for this film? All these questions come about when watching this film and trying to understand the reason it was made,. Because the only reason I see is a film that cherished it's shock value derogatory filmmaking.
The story is of Jennifer Hills. A young short story writer (Camille Keaton) that takes a little vacation in a cottage in the rural N.Y. state area. There she will meet some local folk that will be very interested in her presence there. Instead of her vacation going quietly, the local folk will destroy her and any humanity they had left.
I'm going to be frank and spoil the film from here on. So if anybody really was into seeing this film stop reading now. The film is about Jennifer getting repeatedly raped by four local men. They find her and one by one with playful pauses rape, defile, beat and humiliate her. At the end, when they all are finished with her they put one of the group who is stupid (mentally handicapped) to kill her. He is unable to do it and lies to the rest of the group of men about the act. After the terrible events, Jennifer rests for two weeks with her wounds and then decides to have her revenge on them. She plots then by putting their guard down by sleeping with them, showing off her body and then killing them in horrific manners. And then the film ends.
To start off when you make a film, you make it to tell a story. If you tell it in a proper manner audiences will be able to follow it. When taboo material is going to be apart of that film and shown in detail, filmmakers usually use it in a correct way so not to offend, disgust the viewer or in other ways to get there message across. I Spit On Your Grave has no message for it's viewer. It gladly shows you the rape of a woman over four times by showing every last detail of the act so you can feel apart of it and feel pleasure out of it. How horror films want us to feel pleasure out of the deaths of victims here is the same but with rape of the victim. Bu worst of all the film wants us to believe that a woman or just this particular woman isnt able to call the police or ask for the help. But finds the courage to sleep with the men who raped her so she can kill them. Couldn't she kill them without sleeping with them? Why was she unable to call for help? How is it that the men never asked why nobody heard of a rape or murder or the existence of a out of towner living in town. Does all this sound like a good film? Hell no!
It's not often that you feel disgusted with what you see on the screen. I can withstand zombies, Michael Bay films but not this film was unpleasurable disrespecting crap. The director Meir Zarchi had said that is suppose to be a feminist film because it shows the woman killing the men who raped her. Well bravo I say to him for thinking that killing and sleeping with your rapist is a feminist act. You might say that I'm going overboard and neglecting to say its just a low budget hardcore horror film. Well if you like your horror films dumb, offensive and to pass the limit of not only having a terrible story lack of realism but also disgusting acts that we should endure without a sense of disgust than be my guest and see this filth. And last comment. Film is a form of art and entertainment two vital things this film lacks of. See The Room (2003) or even Anaconda 3 (2008). Don't even bother casting your eyes on this monstrosity or it's new demon child remake that was made this year.
