Black Dynamite (2009)

director: Scott Sanders

writer: Scott Sanders, Byron Minns, Michael Jai White

starring: Michael Jai White

genre: Comedy

It's been a while since the last time I saw a good parody film. Gone are the days of Airplane, Hot Shots or the first Scary Movie films. Now Hollywood makes repetitive and stupid parody films like Superhero Movie and Date Movie. Films that dont really touch the essence of how to make a truly good parody film. And thats were Black Dynamite is different.

The film takes place in the 70's where drugs have taken over the ghetto, crooked politicians exist and the Man has his hands in everything. In this world the only thing stopping the Man and his evil is Black Dynamite (Michael Jai White). After his brother's murder he goes on a rampage from the ghetto to the top of the food chain to take out the man himself and in the process kick some ass.

Before entering into this film you should have a minor knowledge of black exploitation cinema. Back then in the 70's a films like Black Dynamite were of a common occurence. Strong black leads out against the white oppression that the blacks suffered. Some of those films were bad, others plain and then some just great, smart and equal to Hollywood's counterparts of the time. With films like Badassss, Coffy and Shaft which were the most famous.

Black Dynamite takes all the cliches, the technical mistakes, the crazy story-lines and turns into one of the best parody films ever. Black Dynamite get it right where counltess of other films got it so wrong. What those films got wrong is the fact that they just shouldnt parody to parody. Parodying anything for no apparent reason isnt funny if theirs no point or a joke to it. Also parody and satire stems from the love you have of the genre. Mel Brooks loved Frankestein and thats why he made Young Frankenstein. Every second throughout Black Dynamite you can feel the love and respect of the creators to the genre. With so many subtle touches you can see the diffrence between this and let say Meet the Spartans.

I'm not going to spoil the plot, twists or any of the jokes. See the trailer and you will get a good idea of what your in for. Decide for yourself and hope you enjoy this gem of African-American cinema.
