Fast & Furious (2009)

director: Justin Lin

writer: Chris Morgan

starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker

genre: Action, Crime

What can I say? Fast and Furious is nothing more than eye candy and pop corn entertainment. It’s a product that’s easy to sell, fast cars, hot girls, crazy stunts how can the average viewer say no?

We start out in Dominican Republic as we see Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) back to his usual manner of driving and stealing. He and his crew that includes his love Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) show off their skills. Dominic seeing that the law is getting to close leaves Letty so she is unharmed. Later in the film something occurs that makes Dom return to his home and face his demons and kill the man responsible for his troubles Braga. At the same time Brian (Paul Walker) on the other side of the law has the same goal but a different approach. Both enter Braga’s circle in the usual fashion of street racing. As they dive deeper into Braga’s circle secrets are uncovered and revenge is near at hand.

Generally the whole Fast Furious franchise has never been considered of high quality and rightly so. And this film follows closely the first film’s route of the chemistry between Paul Walker and Vin Diesel. Also the route of going undercover as a street racer to take the drug dealer is getting old but it’s all in good fun. I do have to give notice on a little twist that the film has that pretty good considering the material.

Sadly as a Fast Furious film it will have lot of races. The sad thing is that races are not something exceptional. They really more on gadgetry, special effects and instead of stunt drivers were adrenaline and talent is. Films like Ronin or Bullitt are considered to have classic car chases and rightly so because of the fact that they used stunt drivers and great camera angles to make the audience feel apart of the chase. Justin Lin is more interested in the flashy aspects of driving instead of cool intense driving sequences that me personally I wish for.

For what its worth Fast & Furious is not that bad. Going in it with low standards is best thing you can do. It has crazy scenes were you know plausibility went right out the window. But because of the good actors, the action and what film seeks to accomplishes it becomes bearable.
